Gifted

Washington Park Elementary Gifted Program encourages Excellence, Creativity, Enrichment, and Leadership.. Learning opportunities are designed to be open-ended so that they may be tailored to the talents and interests of students. The goal is to engage students in comprehensive study for which the rate of learning, content, and high level processing skills are adjusted to provide an individualized program commensurate with the needs of each intellectually gifted student.

Dear Families,

Welcome to the Gifted Education program at Washington Park Elementary! I'm Shawna Clemons, and I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with our students identified as gifted this year.

We believe that gifted and high-ability students thrive when challenged with broader topics and deeper content, both in their regular classrooms and through specialized enrichment. Our program is designed to provide those crucial opportunities.

Here are the services we currently offer to our gifted learners at Washington Park Elementary:

  • Gifted Certified Homeroom Teachers: All gifted students at WPES have the opportunity to be placed in classrooms led by gifted certified teachers. These educators have specialized training to enhance and differentiate the curriculum, strengthening learning experiences for gifted students. Please note: To remain eligible for gifted services, students must maintain an 80% average in all classes, per Jasper County Schools' continuation policy.
  • Gifted Co-Teach: As the gifted lead, I'll be regularly visiting students' classrooms. My goal is to collaborate with classroom teachers, providing direct support to meet the unique needs of our gifted learners.
  • Gifted Resource: All gifted students will participate in additional learning opportunities through dedicated gifted resource classes, taught by me. For a half-day each week, students will engage in Units of Study and various activities focused on critical thinking, problem-solving, math enhancement, collaboration, and other advanced skills. We'll also extend our learning at times through exciting field trips and special projects!
  • Communication: I'll be sharing updates and important information through Class Dojo. Additionally, students will receive paper copies for special projects and letters for families.

Please don't hesitate to call or email me with any questions. I'm looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and growth with your child!

Sincerely,

Shawna Clemons
